Our public education system has suffered from systemic problems for decades — and it will not be fundamentally improved until teacher unions are removed from the reform process. They are a big part of the problem and have little to do with the solution!
Instruction methodology needs to be revolutionized and we must stop the federally mandated implementation of Common Core. By returning local control to you, the parents, along with expanding school choice–traditional public schools, non-traditional charter schools and private schools should all compete for a higher level of output. We need to return responsibility to parents and locally elected school boards to ensure each child has access to a quality education regardless of income level.
Lastly, we should enthusiastically allow qualified professionals into the classroom as instructors and fully fund merit pay so we can reward those teachers who truly excel at their jobs! Much can (and should) be done to improve Arizona’s public education system but the success or failure of a child’s education begins and ends at home! Parents all to often send their kids to school unprepared, undisciplined and then complain about the outcome.
